Te Kaihau O Kupe/Castlecliff, New Zealand - October 16, 2023 - The Te Kaihau O Kupe/Castlecliff community is buzzing with excitement as the 'Painting up the Park' Project is all set to transform the local basketball court into a colourful and vibrant canvas. The project launch day, slated for 5 November, 2023, weather permitting, promises to be a day filled with celebrations and activities for the whole community.
The ambitious project, supported by its Principal Sponsor, Fleet Line Marking NZ, and funded by the Whanganui District Council Public Art Fund, is all about bringing art, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging to this seaside suburb. The project will feature a stunning mural design, created by Castlecliff Artist Mike Marsh, which is inspired by design elements submitted by local tamariki.
Mike Marsh describes the design as a reflection of the local environment, paying homage to Te Kaihau O Kupe's significant position at the mouth of Te Awa Tupua. It pays homage to the Maunga, the Awa, and the Moana, while incorporating the symbolism of te Rā and te Marama (sun and moon). The mural's vibrant rainbow colours are a testament to the importance of inclusivity and diversity within the community. Mike's vision is for everyone in the community to feel included and responsible for the wellbeing and safety of this cherished area.
The 'Painting up the Park' project will kick off with water blasting of the court on 23 October, followed by fencing the court off from 27 October for painting, with it reopening in time for the launch. The launch day will be held on 5 November and promises to be a memorable event. It will kick off at 11am with a traditional Karakia and inspirational speeches that highlight the significance of this project. The day will continue with a ceremonial "Throwing of the First Ball", symbolising the beginning of a new era for the basketball court.
Sport Whanganui will be hosting various games and activities, ensuring that there's fun for all ages. The delicious aroma of a sausage sizzle will fill the air, adding to the festivities. As a special treat, spot basketball prizes will keep the energy high and the competition fierce. Ice cream giveaways will provide a sweet ending to the day's celebrations. In addition to the other activities the graffiti board wall in the skate park will be reinstated and was initially a feature of the opening.
The project's success has been a collaborative effort, and the community extends its heartfelt gratitude to Fleetline Markers NZ, Progress Castlecliff, Sport Whanganui, Basketball Whanganui, and the Ngā Ringaringa Waewae (the hands and feet) behind this rejuvenation project.
Te Kaihau O Kupe/Castlecliff has shown a commitment to promoting community cohesion and wellbeing through art and recreation. The 'Painting up the Park' Project launch day is sure to be a fantastic testament to the strength and spirit of the community. The residents of this seaside suburb are eagerly looking forward to a day filled with colour, fun, and togetherness on 5 November .
